Image Meaning (Semiotics)
Guten morgen students. This week, in preparation for our Who Am I exhibition and for the sake of really blowing our minds we will take a closer look at images and symbols and their meanings. During this week you will develop a keener eye for interpreting not only what is said, but what is not said in the images and symbols we will analyse. Confused? Don't worry, we have a number of activities and readings that will take us down the road of semiotics.
Here's our agenda for Monday and Tuesday:
1. Warm Up
a. Who Am I? exhibition Oct 9th (2.5 weeks)
b. Need to bring memoirs to class
c. Back to school night (Wednesday)
d. After School and lunch Monday for 1 hour of make-up work time
3. Image Meaning Activity 1
a. 9th and 10th graders download the document image meaning 1
b. follow the instructions provided on the first page of the document.
c. you will need a pencil and paper for this assignment
4. Introduction to image meaning
a. enjoy this awesome keynote
b. check out this humpty dumpty word meaning video on youtube.
5. Image Meaning Activity 2
a. 9th graders: Download this!
b. 10th graders: find 10 images in google image search and write at least two sentences on each image. All work shown in a word document (with bibliography page!). Drop in my drop box when complete.
You may want to use some of the following questions to guide your descriptions:
- What are the individual elements and how do they interact?
- What is the overall message?
- How is the author choosing to present this text/what could they have done different to alter the meaning?
