Title: Seeing (Name) Cry
1. On pg. 19, Wiesel recalls seeing his father cry for the first time: “My father was crying. It was the first time I saw him cry. I had never thought it possible.” This moment is shocking for him because he sees his father as such a strong person, incapable of crying. Tell the story of the first time you remember seeing your father, mother, grandparent, older sibling, or anyone else in your life who represents strength, cry. Describe the experience using concrete details and imagery. What caused them to cry? How did it make you feel? How did you respond? Did it change how you felt about this person?

Title: Hatred
2. On pg. 19, Wiesel describes, for the first time, the feeling of hatred arising in him. About the Hungarian police who force him from his home, he writes, “That was when I began to hate them, and my hatred remains our only link today. They were our first oppressors. They were the first faces of hell and death.” Hatred is a deep and forceful feeling that often arises from a feeling of being mistreated, abused, or oppressed. Write about a time when a feeling of hatred has arisen in you in response to the experience of abuse, mistreatment, or oppression by a person or a group of people. Describe the experience using concrete details and imagery. Why did you feel so hurt by it? How did you respond to the experience and to the feeling of hatred?

A. (Okay) In Fahrenheit 451, the symbolism of fire evolves from destruction to creation to finally purification.

C. (Best) The symbolism of fire in Fahrenheit 451 changes throughout the book; initially it represents the downfall of society but ultimately becomes a symbol of society’s rebirth.

What do you think is going to happen in your book the next time you read? Make specific predictions about what you think will happen next. You must use evidence from today’s reading to support your opinion.

EXAMPLE:
In my reading today, Montag met the intellectual hobos in the woods. I predict that Montag is going to start remembering parts from the Bible as he learns to how better use his memory. The evidence I have for this is when Granger says that everyone has a photographic memory and that we just need to relearn how to make use of it. Therefore I think Montag will slowly start remembering lines from the Book of Ecclesiastes, which he will then use to comfort himself and the others.

(7.) Paradox (n): (1): A statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true
(2): One (as a person, situation, or action) having seemingly contradictory qualities
Captain Beatty is a paradox because while he is in charge of burning books in Fahrenheit 451, he is also a very well read individual.

What is the important information you have to remember from your reading today? Write the important information and explain why you think it is significant.
Also, tell me about your break!

EXAMPLE:
In our last reading of 451, we need to remember that the fire truck pulled up in front of Montag’s house to burn it, and that Beatty knew all along that he was hiding multiple books. We need to remember this because this is a major turning point of the book where Montag’s doubts about his profession are exposed and so his life is going to completely change from how it has always been.
